some thoughts on sigil magic
a) I think in comics it’s hard to talk about this because it sort of inspires eye rolling and weird reactions at this point.
b) I don’t care.
here’s my thoughts. I do believe the universe, reality as we occupy it is an operating system, and that like all operating systems, it is hackable. I believe there are many ways to go about this, most of which I have no idea how to operate or attempt. I’m only familiar with sigil magic to the extent of researching it, learning it from the morrison disinfo speech, and practicing it a couple times. When I’ve done it— It worked for me. The first time I did it was to make POP happen, and it worked for me. Again— I think a lot of it has to do in belief. If you channel your energy into it, into the sigil, into the actual process of altering reality and actualizing what you want, you can do it. A sigil is just a channel for this—a way to hack in.
You could probably alter reality in about ten thousand different ways, but I think it mostly comes down to belief. Sigil magic is consumer grade magic that anyone can do.
here’s Grant talking a little bit about it (speech I initially discovered the concept from)
D4VE #1 “Butthorn Edition” C2E2 Exclusive Ashcan!
Ryan will be at C2E2 at the end of April and will have with him a very special, one-time only offering: an exclusive print run of D4VE #1.
This “Butthorn Edition” will be extremely limited, and never reprinted. Once it’s gone, it’s gone! This 24 page ashcan will feature a variant cover and black & white interiors.
These will be available all weekend at C2E2, table Q13.
Don’t forget, D4VE #4 is out next wednesday, but you can pre-order that beaut right now.
SHUTTER #1 is
This Wednesday, April 9th is the big day. Been amped about this for a while.
And here’s a preview of all four covers (by Leila del Duca, Emma Ríos, Dustin Weaver & Brandon Graham) and the preview that’s going around websites right now. I’ve added the last spread of the title sequence as it seemed weird to cut off there, so consider this a TUMBLR EXCLUSIVE.
It’s $3.50. Features 21 pages of a lead feature. Two pages of what will eventually be a letters column, but is just Leila and me talking for right now. Four pages of comics by Ryan Alexander-Tanner & Catherine Peach. One page of our regular Tiger Lawyer comic by writer Ryan Ferrier & a rotating series of artists. One ad because I really love Michel Fiffe’s Copra. Then a back cover with ANOTHER Leila del Duca & Owen Gieni image, credits, etc.
If you live in Portland, Oregon you can hang out with me on Wednesday at Cosmic Monkey. If you live in Missoula, Montana, you can hang out with Leila on Wednesday at Muse Comics. If you live in Southern California you can hang out with BOTH of us on Friday at Beach Ball Comics.
And finally, here are some thoughts on Shutter from other people who make comic books:"SHUTTER is bold, smart fun — a stunning book on every front. Keatinge and del Duca have crafted something special — at once intimate and epic."- Scott Snyder (Batman, The Wake, Wytches)"Joyous and Heartfelt science-fiction pop with all the capital-R Romance of the last roll of polaroid film on Earth."- Kieron Gillen (Young Avengers, The Wicked + The Divine)
Please do spread the word! And have a good week!
I was lucky enough to get to read the first two issues of SHUTTER and you’re going to want to pick up the first issue this week if you’re at all a fan of fun, beautiful comics.
As someone who has had to do some worldbuilding of my own lately, my favorite part is how they’ve built this unique reality and thrown you into it to let you figure out where or when or if this is, just more adornment for an already madcap adventure. This hits all my touchstones at once.
So stoked for shutter.Check it out on wed, y’all.
